Frozen Nutritious Treats For Your Dog

That's right. Our lovable mongrels get to have their own version of a popsickle! Ever since somebody mentioned to me to put treats inside those kong toys http://www.healthypets.com/kongworld.html then freeze them before handing to your dog, my daily departure for work has become easier. I no longer have to see that frowning face whenever I set off without her. Actually, nowadays, she frowns when she knows I am not working for the day! She knows that she won't be slobbering the carpet!

The two kong toys featured here are filled with oatmeal and salmon. Sometimes, I would put fresh bananas and creamy peanut butter, or frozen apples and creamy peanut butter, or homemade lentil and oatmeal cookies with chicken (no bones or skin). The choices of creating homemade foods are endless. Do be aware of toxic foods for dogs. Oatmeal Salmon Ingredients:

8 ounce of salmon, skin on no bones

6 cups of cold water

4 cups of oatmeal

Procedure:

Boil the salmon in cold water. Remove bones. Skin is okay as long as you remove the fish scales. Do not put any spices, salt or pepper. Save the water. Some water will have evaporated. Set aside the salmon.

Cook the oatmeal with the salmon water. Oatmeal is done when oatmeal is soft. Old-Fashioned oats will cook a few minutes longer than Quick Oats.

Put the oatmeal in stainless bowl. Add the cooked salmon. Use a potato masher to smash the salmon. Mix to combine. Chill. When chilled, put in a container lid.

Refrigerate. Use only what you need to fill the kong. Will keep in the refrigerator for one week.

NOTE: Put the stuffed kong toys in a clean plastic ziploc bags to prevent the kong toys, which are made of rubber, from sticking onto the freezer. You can reuse the ziploc bags.

Bananas and Peanut Butter:

1 Each Whole Banana

1 Cup Creamy Peanut Butter

Procedure:

Divide the bananas to fit the two kong toys. You can stuff the banana pieces first and put peanut butter, or you can interspersed the two ingredients. Put the stuffed kong toys in a clean plastic ziploc bags to prevent the kong toys, which are made of rubber, from sticking onto the freezer. You can reuse the Ziploc bags.

Apples and Peanut Butter:

1 Each Red Delicious Apple without skin, slice or chop coarsely

1 cup Peanut Butter

Procedure:

Interspersed the chopped or sliced apple with creamy peanut butter and freeze. Put the stuffed kong toys in a clean plastic Ziploc bags to prevent the kong toys, which are made of rubber, from sticking onto the freezer. You can reuse the Ziploc bags.

Watch a happy dog at work. This treat may be messy on your carpet. I put a large "placemat" on the floor, then put the kong on it. This placemat could just be a thicker clean rug, fabric or any safe and clean material that your dog would not choke on.
